![]() ![]() ![]() but these battleship fights are not even close to the original Freelancer feeling. Ive tried many other mods before including Discovery. Earlier this year I discovered an article in a games magazine listing the best game mods of the past 10 years and Crossfire was on that list. The update also brings changes to the Battlecruiser class, a shift of focus from being an anti-battleship vessels into a anti-cruiser one. Back in 2003-2005 I played Freelancer very frequently, in the past years I had my phases where I jumped back into the cockpit to play with friends. The latest update to the Discovery Freelancer mod brings a sizable change to one of the longest standing mechanics in the game - the Armor Upgrade. Buy as much 'Niobium' (250 with Humpback - roughly 100.000 at 415 each) 3. I also didn't experience a single crash or other difficulties. go to 'Planet Kyushu'in the Kyushu System with a 'Humpback'Ship or another Cargo ship. I never felt that NPCs used too many nanobots, they use them from time to time, not more than a normal player would do in MP. Yes, Crossfire is a bit more difficult but at the same time it provides everything to compansate this higher difficulty. It was a more exciting ride together with old Freelancer characters and well placed cut scenes and great battles. The storyline was pretty much the best I have ever experienced in a FL mod and build up on the original story, which I really liked. Next to that did you have a NPC escort wing. I know no other mod which even bothered about going such deep into details.ĭuring the story campaign there was exactly one mission that required you to travel long distances but since that was a scout mission where you are the first human being exploring a new sector of space this was totally ok. I didnt have any problems to understand the voices which is remarkable considering that they didnt have the original voice actors but managed to find speakers which fit to the original NPC characters. The voice acting isnt professional studio quality but it is also not bad. I finished the Crossfire story two weeks ago and your points in my eyes are mostly not true. I never finished Crossfire's story arc due to this reason, but then again, the modders don't have enough resources and try to make the best they can. The action is endless as you make your way through 48 known star systems. Dodge through asteroid fields while piloting elite spacecraft. Become a smuggler or a ruthless space thug, a naval hero or a trader. Discovery does a good job of keeping it in the FL-Universe but it only has Roleplay acting MP. You are the freelancer Edison Trent, an intergalactic jack-of-all-trades. Also, many ships are not true to freelancer, they are imported from other franchises. Rinse and repeat and you have the crossfire mod. Here is how it goes: Travel huge distance, jumping across systems, reach enemy, fight for half an hour cuz nanobot spam THEN DO THE ENTIRE FUCKING JOURNEY AGAIN and god forbid if the game crashes on you when some nomad battleship comes up. The missions require you to travel HUGE distances, mostly alone, no AI, and get boring realllly fast. They give you a window after cutscenes with said voice acting so you can understand what they were actually saying so i guess that's fine. Horrible voice acting (yea, ik it is community made but the voice acting is even shit compared to non-professional standards). If you haven't seen it already, visit the Lancer's Reactor: ĭon't want to spoil anything else for you, even with the above comments, the universe is still MANY times larger than older games of the same type.Crossfire is the first that comes to mind but believe me, the post-vanilla gameplay is absolute shit. People are even making mods to attempt to bring the game back to more of a Privateer type game (which personally I was hoping for). Mods are being made to fix this, thankfully, so that the multiplayer game doesn't involve everybody flying around in the best ships fully loaded out. The universe isn't very dynamic, especially in multiplayer, there are EASY ways to max out your level and ship in a few hours. Like BlinderBomber mentioned, the missions could benefit from a bit more creativity, hopefully to be solved in a patch or expansion at the very least. For example, don't know if you noticed, but all the ships are the same speed, this doesn't really make much sense when you have light fighters running around at the same speed as a massive battleship or freighter. ![]() You are the freelancer Edison Trent, an intergalactic jack-of-all-trades. Seems like the team wanted to do a lot, but pulled it out at the last second. Experience a vast, open-ended universe filled with an infinite number of adventures. No doubt, there's a lot of stuff that can be done, but at the same time, it IS missing quite a bit of depth. ![]()
